Allix and I had a lovely Saturday, we popped into the Shop Jeen trunk show which was a feast of the eyes for anyone who loves jewelry. I bought a gold double finger anchor ring that I love! Then we went to Paul's for brunch which felt like a mini holiday in Paris, I think we were the only english speaking people in there. Perfect Saturday.

I had the honor of being interviewed by the lovely Holly Thomas, DC editor of Refinery 29. It was very special because it's my first interview ever and Refinery29 has been my favorite fashion site for years. It helped me though many a fashion school project. Holly and her team came round to my little apartment one sunny morning and Sebastian Marin took all the photos, we also ventured out to some of my favorite pretty spots in my neighborhood, we had a blast.

Kate Warren was kind enough to send me these fun photos we took outside the Cap Fabb Anniversary Party on tuesday at Cities. I wore this magical magenta pleated dress, it has a great 1970s vibe and its super comfortable. I wore it with a black biker jacket to mix it up and some gold jewelry and a black clutch. The fresh flowers were added accessories were from the Cap Fabb anniversary party, sponsored by H. Bloom. I was very sad they only last one night, but they are now brightening up my living room. I've always been a fan of mixing hard and soft elements, pretty lace with hardware statement necklace, girly red skirt with tough ankle boots. I like mixing it up and coming up with new outfits from my closet without having to go shopping for anything new. Try putting two things together you never have before, you might love the results.

PS. People always ask me where I bought it that gold chain necklace. Truth is, I just made it from some thick chain I bought at the hardware store. It's a pretty easy DIY if you want to try it, all you need to do is find the kind of chain that is sold on a roll, measure how long you want it around your neck, get them to cut it for you and then just ad on a clasp that you can find at any bead store. Or you can even add a ribbon to tie it together at the ends. Get creative!

Day 2 was so much fun, it was unreal to be there. I've been following NYFW online for years, and waited for the runway reports in magazines before that. I met some great people, saw some insane fashion and got to see some of my favorite bloggers in real life, and they look even more beautiful than in their photos. I must say one of my favorite parts of the weekend was taking street style photos, I have alot to learn, but it was a great experience being surrounded by the worlds most stylish.

What I wore at NYFW Day 2.

It was funny, when I got home and downloaded my 1000 photos from Fashion Week I realized I had none of what I wore. Thanks to Reuben Harley from Street Gazing for these photos. I was nice to hang with the street style photographers for a while outside the tents. I am starting to understand the thrills street photographers get from getting that perfect shot.

I swear my outfit was more interesting than this underneath, but it was snowing that day! You can see a little of the peachy pleated skirt I got from Ashley Thomas from LPM.

NYFW Photo Diary: Day 1

I only got a little taste of New York Fashion Week on Day 1 due to travel time, checking in our hotel, need for NYC food, etc. But it was a glorious taste at that! Besides the numbing cold wind, The Lincoln Centre Plaza was buzzing, and I had an hour or so to snap some street style pics. The beige and grey stone of the plaza was decorated everyones pop's of color. There were many well dressed ladies and men out and about, you can always count on New York for choosing fashionable over weather appropriate. There was lots of fur paneled coats, brightly colored jackets, jeans and accessories and winter maxi's. It seemed Lita's in all shades wear the comfy heels of choice for the ladys; from black to powder blue to glitter covered.

I will post more pics this week of the Bloggers Night Out party, insides the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tent, more street style and my attempt at runway photography. I have 1000 photos to sift through!

Shopping in DC lately I have seen a lot of orange in stores, from pretty shades of apricot to darker hues of rust. But I have not seen many people wearing the color on the street. Orange can be tricky, but with the right things it can really make an outfit. Let this surprise of sunshine inspire you to wear orange!

Style maverick Kate Warren hotsed a fashion shoot flash mob of sorts in DC. It was a great night spent at Smith Commons, drinking the Kate cocktail, dancing with Allix and meeting new people. That night also marked my FIRST OFFICIAL DANCE IN THE SNOW! Pretty spectacular.

A lovely artist named Annalisa did this drawing of me, and I just love it! She has such a whimsical style of art, so I wanted to get to know Annalisa a little better to find out her story.

Annalisa gained her drawing skills when she attended The International School of Comics. Her interest in fashion illustration grew while working for a clothing company in Italy, and she is greatly inspired by Japanese and Korean fashion styles. She spends hours on the internet looking for inspiring images and loves drawing bright colors, clean lines and slender frames. All perfect features for fashion illustration.

DIY: Lana Del Rey Hair (via I-D)

My feelings toward Lana Del Rey have gone from up to down to up again. A friend and I got pretty obsessed after finding her video online when it had about 20 000 views. There were 4 photos of her on google images and no life bio. I think many of her fans with this new found love found quite cheated after finding out about Elizabeth Grant. After cringing at the SNL performance and watching/ reading all the interviews I now feel warmer towards her. And think she has handled the backlash well, and I now see her just as a beautiful girl with a dream.

Whatever your opinions on the girl, you can't deny she is beautiful. Bellow is a nice video done by I-D magazine on how to achieve her signature hairstyle. The model they use is literally a living doll.

Tuesday was the January DC Blogger meet up held by CapFab at Madewell in Georgetown. I got there a bit late but got to catch up with a few favorites and met a new fashion-loving friends. I didn't take any photos, partly because I was too busy talking and partly because I am trying to make a little video, so I filmed a tiny bit. Just before I left Cape Town, one fine Sunday, a few of us got together to do a fun little shoot at Thelonious Studios. This is visual proof of my first attempt of wearing orange. I traditionally stick to black and grey clothing, due to living in London for a year with an apartment of Swedish style mavens. But as I see the Color Blocking trend slowly fleeting I thought I'd grab onto some bright color before it was too late.

I got this skirt for an amazingly great price form good ol' Mr P, its nice to not have to shell out a lot of money to try out a new look. I think they have them in other colors too, so go check them out!

A double thank you to Miss Katie Warren, for inviting us over for a perfectly curated New Years cocktail party (complete with burning fire place, custom cocktails and chocolate covered strawberries) and for documenting the night with her camera. You see, the only picture I have of the night is a very blurry one of a champagne bottle at the moment when 2011 became 2012. It was a lovely New Years - and I wore an oversized navy bead and sequin top with hotshots and suede mary-jane platforms to the event.

What I am really loving about Washington DC is how much it takes care of its city and puts so much into its museums. Slowly put surely I am going down the list of all of them in DC. I absolutely loved the Botanical Gardens. It was so warm inside I felt like I was back in South Africa! We just caught the end of the festive Christmas display with miniature versions of famous DC buildings. It was lovely. Plus, anywhere with a wishing well is fine by me.

2012 has been declared the year to try new things, so on the first day of the year Allix and I visited The National Botanical Gardens for the first time and then took a lovely walk to Chinatown where we dined at Oyamel and dared to try Grasshopper Tacos!

I have to say, compared to the rest of the places I have visited in the colder months of the year, getting caught in a New York City rain fall can be pretty marvelous. Other than the sight of hundreds of colorful umbrellas popping up like daisies in a field of concrete. You get to see actual "meet-cutes" happening right before your eyes; a dashing man leaps to shelter a pretty lady with his perfect-for-two umbrella, or 2 people sharing a cab to save one of them from getting soaked in the rain. I'm pretty sure they are all currently having whirlwind romances, all thanks to that New York City rain.

Dear Dorothy accessories

Laura Windvogel is a connoisseur of bows, beautiful clothes and all things vintage. She is also a dear friend and one of my favorite people in this whole world. She single handedly got me into the Christmas spirit this year by blasting Mariah Carey's Christmas Album when I came to visit her at work. (If she tells you her bosses are forcing her to listen to it, its a lie!) I was also lucky enough to have her come help me style a shoot on the weekend that I will be sharing soon.

I guess I'm a lil behind on runway round ups. But, whatever, I just wanted to proclaim a lil love for Carven's S/S 2012 collection. Beautiful colors (and collars) on bright young models must have made an energizing show to watch. Designer Guillaume Henry wanted "The models to seem like a girl you would see in the street. We tried to recreate the street for the show. It’s like you’re in a cafe and you see these girls walking by.”

As you walk along Bergdorf Goodman building, you are completely transported to 5 whole new worlds. From pearlescent polar bears with seals balancing white china on their noses to a paradise of tropical birds made from brass and sequins. Oh, and there are pretty extraordinary clothing and costumes too.

I've always been into visual merchandising, and ended up gawking at each window for quite sometime. I was like being at a really stylish and ornate natural history museum. Why are all museums not more like this?

New Store Opening: Babette

“Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions.” Coco Chanel

With this Coco Chanel quote in mind, I finally took the time to explore Soho. Equipped with coffee and my camera I wandered the cobbled streets, visited the kooky stores, designer boutiques and marveled at the suburbs famous architecture. That part of New York definitely has an allure that is hard to explain, it makes you feel as if you are an extra on the set of a Woody Allen movie. Its also a complete feast of the eyes if you are into street style. I've never seen so many people stopping each other for style shots and quick sidewalk interviews.

I got a bit lost walking from Soho to The East Village (but I love getting lost on trips, they usually turn into the best little adventures) The people start looking achingly hip and I realize I am getting stares for carrying the most unfashionable accessory in New York, a map.

Time to re group and study the map from the comfort of a quaint coffee shop.

I highly recommend visiting Screaming Mimi's vintage store (382 Lafayette Street), apparently Cindy Lauper used to work there and they have amazing clothes all categorized into decades, perfect for when you are having a "Edie Sedgewick" or "Grace Kelly" kind of day.

Also visit Evolution (120 Spring Street) Its pretty difficult to describe this science and art store they sell the most interesting stock I have ever seen. They sell and rent unique natural history collectibles usually only seen in museums.

Great For: Christmas decor, handmade jewelry, holiday pies, spices, winter accessories, plus a wide assortment of fun gifts for everyone this holiday season.

The day I went it was raining a bit, but it all added to the festive mood. Along with the red and green decor, christmas lights and the smell of apple cider floating though the air. The market is lit up against the dark grey buildings and the rows of red and white tents are very inviting, there is no way you can walk past it without going inside for a look.

One of my all time favorite films. Its the wonderful combination of Audrey Hepburn, Paris in the 1950s, an amazing fictional fashion magazine and a dreamy wardrobe by my all time favorite costume designer, Edith Head. Anyone who loves vintage needs to see Funny Face.

DIY: Inky Ombre Nails

You'll need three nail polishes: an opaque nude color, a super-dark hue and a clear topcoat.

1. Start by painting nails with the pale hue, and let dry completely.
2. Next, paint a very thick layer of clear topcoat over the nude color.
3. While the topcoat is still wet (and working one nail at a time) use short strokes
and a heavily-loaded brush to dab the dark color just along the tip of the nail.
It's all about creating a painterly effect here, so be sure to lay it on thick and
don't worry about being too precise; the two polishes should run together to
create a marbled effect.
4. Let nails dry completely, clean up any mistakes around the nail with nail polish remover,
and finish with another layer of clear topcoat.

I am falling in love with this city, but I may be romanticized by the great changing of the seasons. I get massively inspired by the season that is happening and you get real seasons here in America, which I love. I've naturally been wearing rusty oranges, yellows, greys and dark greens with bronze and copper accessories to punctuate outfits. The leaves are changing and falling from the trees branches more everyday. I guess I'm going to be in grey and black all winter.

Washington DC is a cultural feast for any art/ music/ nature/ dance/ history lover. My favorite places so far has been the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture garden, The Washington Ballet, The Textile Museum and The Zoo.

There is inspiration in this city anywhere you cast your gaze.

I was thrilled to receive an invite to Refinery29's launch in DC. Refinery29 is my favorite fashion site and I'm so glad they have added a DC branch to their website as it is clear DC is making its own fashion mark in America. The launch was so much fun, and it was packed with stylish girls and boys. It was great to hang out with the great fashionitsas and bloggers from the area. Everyone is so sweet and beyond welcoming. The event took place at Madewell, I finally got to take a look at the Alexa Chung x Madewell range. There is a red chiffon dress that I cant get out of my head, I may go back to try it on this week.

DIY: The Cap Toe Shoe

Geri from Because Im Addicted and Sophie from Style Hive came up with this quick and easy DIY trick to create chic cap toe shoes. The trend dates back to classic Coco Chanel but has been spotted on recent runways and on the streets of Paris and New York. Try it out, I think I'm going to give some old black booties a metallic cap toe and therefore a new lease on life!

How to: The Cap Toe

You will need:
A pair of boots or flats or flat boots
Tape
Black or white acrylic or leather paint
Paint brush
Clear gloss finish spray

1. Cut and place a piece of tape around the toes of your shoes.

2. Apply 1 coat of paint to each toe and let dry for about 10 minutes.

3. Apply 2nd coat of paint and let dry.

4. Spray a moderate amount of clear finish to each toe and let dry.

5. Slowly peel back tape to reveal your crisp new cap toes.

Easy peasy.

In the late 1940s and 1950s Christian Dior added flounces to waistlines of skirts and jackets to invent a whole a new look for women. The ladylike silhouette is back on the Dior 2012 runway, as well as Jason Wu and French favorite Celine.

“Peplums cinch in the waist and highlight curves in a way that’s come-hither yet demure,” said Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs.

I am a huge fun of the vintage style full skirt, so I love this trend as a fresh update. I will be on the lookout for either a relaxed lace peplum skirt or classic shift dress with a more stiff peplum in a bright color.

A day to myself, in New York

New York City is less of an assault to the senses the second time round, you know what to expect. You welcome it this time. After a lemon & ginger tea in the morning, I pretend jet lag is a myth, grab my sketch book and camera, and wander into the unknown. My original plan was to shop on 5th Ave, but New York doesn't care about your plans. While trying to navigate myself I stood on a corner and looked around (without trying to look TOO much like a lost tourist). I saw a small tuft of green leaves poking through the gap of two tall grey stone buildings. With the wind blowing, the leaves moved and it was like Central Park was waving at me from a distance.

Theres nothing like the juxtaposition greenery suddenly just there in front of you, in all its glory, contrasting with all the walkways and surrounding skyscrapers. I was very happy to have strolled onto the pathway where Penny Lane told William here real name in Almost Famous. As well as the beautiful bridge used in so many Romantic Comedies. So I sat down on the bench there for a while, drank some Snapple and drew the trees, ducks and well dressed people walking by.

Introducing, The Mint Collection

A few weeks ago I started a new project called The Mint Collection in Cape Town. I brought back so many vintage gems from my travels and it was time they were showcased.

This was a fun collaboration I put together for the Spring/ Summer 2011 lookbook. The awesome Andrew Berry did the photography and the very talented Olga Kotova did the illustrations. Its always a good time doing creative work with friends, especially when your friends are these ones.
